Committing to the Adventure

There’s a difference between fully committing to a decision and a half hearted ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ attitude.

One flows with grace and ease.
The other is like constantly swimming against the current of a raging river.

One finds joy in taking the steps required.
The other has the mind looking at backup plans and asking ‘what if this doesn’t work?’

One takes the path of adventure, committed to creating something new.
The other looks for what others have done before and follows the road they’ve paved.

One says it doesn’t matter when a step doesn’t work as expected and continues anyway.
The other gets frustrated about it and gives up.

There is often a fine line between the two but the difference in results can be quite dramatic.

Breaking the Rules of Breakthrough!

Have you ever said “I’ll do it tomorrow”? Well, that’s what I’ve done with my blogging for the last 3 months! There has always been an excuse.

Don’t get me wrong – I love writing but I’ve been reluctant to hit publish. What I have found in the past when I’ve put things off is that there is usually a set of unconscious rules or beliefs on the way things have to be. This has definitely been the case here.

When it gets to this, I find the easiest way out of it is to write down the rules, look at each one and ask what the worst thing would be if I was to break them. Then put aside the rules (or beliefs) that are holding me back and go ahead and do it anyway. Break the rules!

My list of rules for blogging that I came up were:
– Blogging must be done on the same day every week (oh – I’ve missed it for this week)
– All blogs must have a photo
– Blogs must be grammatically perfect (I’ve been known to review and review for hours)
– They must pass the ‘does this content make me look stupid?’ test

So, from now on, I’m going to publish blogs whenever I feel like it, limit the amount of editing I do to 1 hour for each blog, publish with or without photos and not question the content. I’m going to put these rules / beliefs aside, do it anyway and have fun with it!

Three Things I’d Wish I’d Known 3 Years Ago

You Can Always Find A Reason

I could always find a reason to stay in my comfort bubble. I would tell myself I had had a great day and made a difference by what I had accomplished. Other times I told myself there was more certainty in what I was doing compared to trying to do something I truly loved. These days I’m more aware of my tendency to find a reason not to do things.

Make Little Changes Often

When I was living in a comfort bubble, I always believed that major changes were required to step out of it and live a more fulfilling life, which was daunting to say the least. What I’ve realised is that it’s about little changes every day that go toward building a life I love. Making little changes often helped me to minimise the uncomfortable feelings that often come with change.

Tomorrow Is Always Comfortable

“I’ll do it some day” or “I’ll do it later” were always my catch-cries. I may as well have been saying “I’ll never do it”! Effectively the only thing we do by using these phrases is create comfort and stay in the same spot. Now if I’m serious about something, I put a timeline on it. I set a date and stick to it no matter what reason comes up.
